Space Traveler Discloses Depression After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
