RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
