Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Readings

Various sections of the city registered an pollution measurement above 500, which represents 10x the safe threshold recommended by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding safe standards.

Fireworks Ban and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the city as the cold season begins.

Yet earlier this year, the newly elected local leadership approached the highest court to propose a modification of the prohibition.

They proposed allowing "green crackers" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Verdict and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities agreed to the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to the most severe measurements seen during celebrations in at least three years.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming worsening air quality in their urban centers on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

The dangerously high levels of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near Diwali, the levels of toxic particles in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.

Diverse Pollution Sources

This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby regions of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating hazardous haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air descends.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the roughly thirty-three million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various studies.

The contaminated air results in high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can even lead to cancer.

The pollution is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand early deaths each year in the city.
